This is the second Casablanca fan we installed in our house, much to my regret. The Inteli-touch electronic controller modules ($100 for replacement part) have blown on both fans. That means both the fan and light will not work.

When the first fan was installed, I also had a whole-house surge protector installed at the same time.(Highly recommended-- our light bulbs last almost forever now.)So the excuse that the failures (they happened at different times) were due to surges is false. Both failures happened in the first several years, but not during the 1-year warranty. The lifetime warranty is ONLY for the motor, which never fails anyway.

Don't think that because this fan costs 3-4X as much as everyone else's high end models that you are going to get better service. If your circuit goes in year two like mine did, and you feel like you have got special treatment coming, forget it.They are going to charge you $100 for a circuit board that probably costs less than $5.

When I read negative reviews, I always think, "That person was just unlucky, all the other satisfied customers don't bother posting."I'm not the only the only one to have this problem, do a web search on "protect Casablanca varistor", and you will find a number of web sites selling an electronic component which is supposed to help protect this delicate circuit. Casablanca should have redesigned this circuit board years ago to include the varistor. (I believe the RMM circuit was last redesigned in 2000.)

The ironic thing is that the big box home improvement stores sell a new controller board AND remote for less than half the price of the circuit board, and it has more features than Casablanca's (it can be set to turn off in the middle of night when temperature drops past your set point.)

Problem is, Casablanca's fans are different than the rest, and they are not compatible with this controller.

BTW, I will splurge and pay Casablanca $200, plus $ for the varistor and do the hour of work apiece needed to do this fix, because I like how smoothly, quietly, and slowly you can run them. But I feel taken advantage of, because of their lack of support and their poor engineering.

UPDATE: I just ordered the part, and Casablanca has told all of their distributors that the part is back-ordered, and will not be available until mid September 2010.It sounds like it has been out of stock since before 10-June.

I will add an aside here.I have had problems with other high-end products for the house (a Kohler kitchen faucet that *I* probably messed up) comes to mind. These companies always astonish me when they just ship an expensive replacement part, no questions asked, no charge, and it arrives, sometimes almost overnight.Casablanca is astonishing me also, but its backwards from the way it should be.
